Fireplace in the Entry Lobby

Expressions of my design sense

We hired an architect to do the majority of the design work, however I exercised my prerogative and designed a few key elements myself.

One example of this is the granite fireplace and treatment of the east wall of the lobby.  The huge piece of granite that forms the hearth came from the same avalanche on Highway 20 that provided the granite boulders in the climbing plaza.  There is a funny story about this hearth stone that Gene Yore can tell you if you ask.

Every piece of wood in this picture was salvaged and re-milled by Mountaineer volunteers from the shed.

"Go Outside and Play - Skier"
"Go Outside and Play - Hiker"

I designed the entry canopy using the massive timbers salvaged from the shed.

I also designed the six steel icons that stand above the canopy.  This installation is entitled "Go outside and play!" and is intended to artistically represent some of the activities Mountaineers participate in.  Three of the icons are shown above.  We're waiting for them to rust so that they stand out more.  They are lit at night.
